Binangkal is a popular Filipino snack from the Visayas and Mindanao regions. These deep-fried sesame seed-coated dough balls have a crunchy exterior and a soft, slightly sweet interior. They're perfect for pairing with coffee or tea.
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
1 large egg
¼ cup milk (or water)
¼ cup vegetable oil (for the dough)
Sesame seeds (for coating)
Cooking oil (for frying)
Instructions
Prepare the Dough:
In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda.
In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and vegetable oil.
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a soft, non-sticky dough forms.
Shape the Dough:
Take small portions of dough and roll them into 1-inch balls.
Coat each ball evenly with sesame seeds by rolling them on a plate of seeds.
Fry the Binangkal:
Heat cooking oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
Fry the sesame balls in batches until they are golden brown, turning occasionally to cook evenly (about 3-5 minutes).
Use a slotted spoon to remove the balls from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
Cool and Serve:
Let the binangkal cool slightly before serving. Enjoy the crispy and nutty goodness!
