Binangkal

Binangkal is a popular Filipino snack from the Visayas and Mindanao regions. These deep-fried sesame seed-coated dough balls have a crunchy exterior and a soft, slightly sweet interior. They're perfect for pairing with coffee or tea.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup sugar

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp baking soda

  • 1 large egg

  • ¼ cup milk (or water)

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil (for the dough)

  • Sesame seeds (for coating)

  • Cooking oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:

    • In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda.

    • In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and vegetable oil.

    • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a soft, non-sticky dough forms.

  2. Shape the Dough:

    • Take small portions of dough and roll them into 1-inch balls.

    • Coat each ball evenly with sesame seeds by rolling them on a plate of seeds.

  3. Fry the Binangkal:

    • Heat cooking oil in a deep pan over medium heat.

    • Fry the sesame balls in batches until they are golden brown, turning occasionally to cook evenly (about 3-5 minutes).

    • Use a slotted spoon to remove the balls from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.

  4. Cool and Serve:

    • Let the binangkal cool slightly before serving. Enjoy the crispy and nutty goodness!
